Growing Tips for Blackwater

Blackwater is an easy strain to grow, even if you don't have any prior experience cultivating cannabis. The strain is low maintenance and is a great choice for first-time cultivators to cut their teeth on. Blackwater cannabis plants will thrive both indoors and outdoors, but have an easier time growing indoors because of the grower's ability to control the climate. If you are going to grow indoors, you will have to replicate a warm, sunny environment with stable temperatures and humidity. Blackwater produces long and dense Indica buds as long as they receive ample fresh air and direct sunlight, as well as high-quality, nutrient-rich soil. If you are going to grow outdoors, you will need to maintain a consistent temperature and humidity to get these plants to harvest. Having access to a greenhouse is the best way to give these plants the ideal outdoor climate they require without having to contend with unexpected weather variables — particularly important across many Canadian regions where growing seasons can be short or unpredictable. Because these plants can grow to be upwards of 2.4 metres tall, they require a generous amount of vertical space to grow without limitations. The ideal temperature for these plants is around 18–29°C. Humidity levels should be kept at 50–75% during the vegetative stage and slowly decreased into the flowering stage of growth. Growing indoors will ensure that the medium to high humidity levels are reached every day that the plants are in the growing stages. Topping, Low-stress training (LST), and the Screen of Green (ScrOG) methods are the best training techniques for this strain. Each of these methods helps control the plant's height while also reinforcing the heaviest buds so that they don't break or bend the branches. These methods will ultimately increase your yields come harvest time. The Blackwater strain requires an 18–20 hour light cycle to reach the vegetative stage of growth. Changing the light cycle to a 12-hour on and 12-hour off cycle will induce flowering and help get these plants to harvest.

Yields, Flowering Time, and Harvest

  • Flowering Time: Growing indoors, you can expect the Blackwater strain to harvest after a flowering period of 55–65 days.
  • Yields: Indoor yields are around 450 grams per square metre, while outdoor grows typically produce up to 500 grams per plant. Both indoor and outdoor yields are quite impressive considering that these plants are easy to grow and have a relatively short flowering time.
  • Harvest: Outdoor growers can plan on harvesting their yields around the middle of October, depending on when the seeds were planted.

Blackwater: A Sublime Sensory Experience

The Blackwater terpene profile is directly responsible for how the plant smells and tastes, and the strong effects it has on its users. The most dominant terpene in this strain is caryophyllene, while limonene, delta-3 carene, and myrcene are the secondary terpenes.

  • Caryophyllene: Most Dominant – Known as a spicy and peppery terpene, caryophyllene is most commonly found in cinnamon, cloves, black pepper, and cannabis plants.
  • Myrcene: Secondary Terpene - The "Mother of all Terpenes", myrcene gives cannabis its earthy flavour and aroma. Myrcene can be found in several cannabis strains.
  • Limonene: Fresh Citrus - Found mostly in the rinds of citrus fruits, limonene is known for helping to decrease anxiety and can improve lung function when found in cannabis.
  • Delta-3 Carene: Sweet and Earthy – Also found in pine, cedar, basil, and rosemary, this terpene is known for being sweet, earthy, citrusy, and pine-like in aroma and flavour.
