More About the Atomic Northern Lights Strain

Atomic Northern Lights is an indica-dominant cultivar with a backstory that reads like a passport stamp collection. Its roots trace back to the 1980s, when Afghani indica genetics were paired up with Thai Haze. That pairing helped set the stage for what growers came to know as Northern Lights.

Northern Lights then found a second home in Holland, where Sensi worked it, developed it, and stabilised it into the version that built a serious reputation, including multiple Cannabis Cup wins. After that, the line travelled again, this time to Canada, where Dr. Atomic Seeds recrossed Northern Lights with distant relatives from their own stock.

The result is Atomic Northern Lights, a Northern Lights-leaning cultivar that keeps the classic indica dominant vibe, paired with a fast flowering cycle. It's the kind of lineage story that makes sense once you see the goal: keep the famous Northern Lights character, tighten it up, and push it toward a quicker finish.

Growing Tips for Atomic Northern Lights

Atomic Northern Lights can be grown indoors or outdoors by experienced cannabis cultivators. However, it is recommended that you grow your plants outdoors as the strain performs best in an outdoor grow setup.

This strain is sturdy and has a good resistance to mould and mildew as well as pests. It can be grown by inexperienced growers as long as they pay attention to every step of the grow. Intermediate to master level growers will have an easier time bringing this strain to harvest.

The strain requires steady temperatures, humidity, and lighting to really thrive. Providing the best environment possible will go a long way when it comes to harvesting larger yields after a relatively short flowering time. The ideal temperature for these plants is 21–27°C. In terms of humidity levels, you'll want to set it at 40–60% during the vegetative growth stage. To get the plants through to the flowering stage, you will need to drop the humidity to a steady 40–50% to avoid mould, mildew, and bud rot.

Topping and low-stress training (LST) are the best methods for this plant. The plant grows with leaves that form a canopy. Topping and trimming those top leaves will allow light to reach even the lowest buds, creating an even grow and increasing your yields come harvest time. These plants do well with an 18-hour light schedule during the vegetative phase. Switching to a 12/12 light cycle once you hit the flowering stage will help you get to harvest with the biggest buds possible.

Yields, Flowering Time, and Harvest

  • Flowering Time: Growing indoors, you can expect the Atomic Northern Lights strain to harvest after a short flowering period of 55–65 days.
  • Yields: Indoor yields are around 300 grams per square metre, while outdoor grows typically produce up to 400 grams per plant. These yields are decent considering the amount of effort it takes to bring this strain to harvest. Because the plants are shorter than average, you can plant multiple plants in the same grow and increase your harvest exponentially.
  • Harvest: Outdoor grows should be ready to harvest around the middle of October, depending on when you planted your seeds.

Atomic Northern Lights: Earthy & Pungent

The Atomic Northern Lights terpene profile is directly responsible for how the plant smells and tastes, and the strong effects it has on its users. The most dominant terpene in this strain is pinene, while terpinolene and myrcene are the secondary terpenes.

  • Pinene: Most Dominant – Pinene is found most commonly in pine needles, conifer trees, and in certain strains of cannabis.
  • Terpinolene: Secondary Terpene – Combines well with cannabinoids. This terpene is responsible for the woody and floral aroma of cannabis.
  • Myrcene: Mother of All Terpenes - Myrcene can be found in a number of cannabis strains and provides the herb with an earthy and woody flavour and aroma.
